It's been a long time and I think it's time for me to update something here. One month passed quietly as I busy myself with the bridging course in ANU. When I first came here I was a bit lost, don't know where to go and what to do. Thank god I came with a bunch of people, which made things so much easier.
Bridging course ended the past Friday, which means I'm officially a year 3 student now. During the bridging course, we had classes for clinical skills for the way they do things here, history taking for the long history they do here, and of course introduction to various new things here. Again, I was a bit lost and crawling like a baby and now that bridging course has ended, I will be thrown into the wards and start doing the real stuff now. I feel so unprepared, but hopefully things will turn out fine and I can pick up fast.
I met a few good doctors during bridging course, including the one that organized the whole bridging course for us, Dr Graeme Moller. He's so kind, so inspiring and so helpful. He even drove us around looking for house and hunting for furniture and electrical appliances! Had some trouble hunting for house to stay near the Canberra Hospital but gotten a fairly good deal in the end, and with the help of Dr Moller we managed to settle in well. Another inspiring doctor I met was Dr Lueck. She is knowledgeable, confident and can be pretty mean. I think she got really disappointed when some of us failing our mock OSCE so badly during the last few days of bridging course. Among all, I was the worst (perhaps getting 5 marks in a 20 marks station) and I can see how pissed off she was and thanks to me, everyone got lectured although they did well. She can be really mean but I guess that is also another motivation for me to try to improve myself so that I don't get criticized as much in the future.
On a happier note, I like Canberra weather a lot. Though it's oddly cold, and can go down to 6 degrees at night, I love the cool and dry weather. We were told that when Autumn comes in March, we can expect zero degrees and during winter, which comes about July, it can go down to negative ten and it'll be lucky if we have a few days that it goes above zero during the day. Need to shop for more winter clothing!!
Food wise, nothing particularly good in Canberra, though I like an Indian restaurant that cook rather good butter chicken. And we're cooking now that we have a permanent house, cooking everyday as eating out is so expensive for poor students like us.
Friends, haven't met classmates from year 3 yet as the bridging course involves only the IMU students. We'll be meeting them Monday, which is 2 days from now. Honestly speaking, I'm nervous, and feeling a bit intimidated, probably due to the reason that my English is still pretty bad.
And Monday, is the official day I start calling myself a year 3 medical student, wish me luck!
